Chain of custody (CoC)
Published Reviewed
Chain of custody is the documented, unbroken trail that follows certified material — such as FSC- or PEFC-certified wood and fibre — through every stage of processing, manufacturing, and trade. Each organisation in the chain holds its own CoC certificate and controls mixing of certified and non-certified inputs, so a claim on the final product can be traced back through every custodian. It proves the claim, not the forestry itself.
